The local Tamil community has been using their numbers to hold University Ave., a major Toronto thoroughfare, in an attempt to have US and Canadian governments intervene in the slaughter in Sri Lanka.
The Tamils are drawing some of the largest crowds of dedicated demonstrators Toronto has witnessed in a while.
Causing a mild crisis in our city’s street.
Yesterday, Monday, Apr. 27, un-armed peaceful protesters held both eight lanes of University Ave from Queen St. to Dundas. The neighborhood of U.S. Consulate.
Protestors shouted slogans, drummed and generally had a great time drawing attention to the genocide in Sri Lanka. Numerous sound systems, including megaphones and an impressive generator powered loud speaker setup kept the protestors motivated.
Toronto Police Service, though heavily armed with protest removal equipment, allowed protestors to wear themselves in the beautiful sunny day.
TPS created a permiter protecting the US Consulate, while unknown US officials on the consulate rooftop used the opportunity to film Canadian protestors. U.S. government officials deny spying on Canadians.
Overnight police moved demonstrators off the westside south bound lanes.
Tamil protestors currently occupy four lanes on the eastside north bound lanes.
Traffic is detouring around the neighborhood from Queen St. to Dundas.
Causing plenty of traffic headaches.
Possibly creating such headaches that Tamils will loose support for their worthy cause.
The street is a major thoroughfare.
Organizers claim they will hold their vigil infront of the U.S. Consulate until a ceasefire orĀ Friday afternoon, whichever comes first.
